Stoke Road, Bletchley, Milton Keynes 2004 — present
Axis Design Collective won an invited competition for the development of 94 canal side apartments, townhouses and bungalows in the Bletchley area of Milton Keynes. The development was derived from a very detailed set of development design codes that stipulated building heights, frontage treatments and materials to be used.
The Axis proposal maximises existing views across the site whilst creating a new low density village setting incorporating communal gardens, a village green and a a play area, all linked by a canal side walk. The development is intended to provide a new focus for the surrounding area and further enhance the existing local character.
A strong sustainability agenda was utilised on this project, incorporating extensive use of ‘room in the roof’, and passive solar low energy design whilst maintaining a strong rural character, with the vernacular of the buildings being drawn from the surrounding area creating a hierarchy of spaces and events as the development addresses the canal.
The Axis submission was made in collaboration with Lovell Partnerships and English Partnerships.
