Irish Quarter

Birmingham 2000

The commission for the study of Birmingham’s Irish Quarter came from the Birmingham Irish Community Forum; the umbrella group representing Irish interests in the city.

Irish Quarter sketch

The task for Axis was to propose how the existing Irish Quarter could be strengthened and developed. The Irish Quarter is in Digbeth and Deritend, an ancient, but rundown part of the city centre. The area has great environmental potential, but has had little investment for many years. The Axis study proposes a 15 step process of regeneration, based on an analysis of the area’s character and potential.

A critical part of the proposal is a masterplan for the central area of the Quarter, where the main A41 road crosses the River Rea. It is important that there be a coordinated plan for the development of empty sites, and the reconstruction of the road and the river, at this intersection, which is of great historical significance.
